This paper describes system design principles and fundamental performance limitations for operation of ultra-wideband and widebeam (UWB) SAR systems. Most of the results are general in nature and apply for a broad range of frequency bands. The results are illustrated by design examples from the CARABAS-II system which is an UWB SAR system which operates in the lower VHF band (20-90 MHz) and uses horizontal polarisation
