Design of a course of random signals using MATLAB

The Engineering School of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) opened the program in telecommunications engineering in 1991. One of the courses is in random signals analysis, a course about stochastic signals applied to communications engineering. This type of course is not common at bachelor level for engineers. However, the topics are essential for this program. Given the profile that is intended for the students, one of the objectives was to provide not only the theory but also practical proficiency in this area. Consequently, we designed experiments using MATLAB. The course design has been applied since 1994, with good results. In this article, I describe the theoretical and experimental aspects of the course, and also the basic characteristics of the telecommunications program.
