The intent of this paper is to inspire the utility industry's forward thinking by revisiting past accomplishments and examining today's technologies to definitively define a smart grid. The author proposes that a substantial foundation for the future Smart Grid has been established throughout his utility's long history and visionary efforts, which have forged its smart grid strategy based on five key smart grid themes. Southern California Edison's five keys to a successful Smart Grid - renewable, distributed energy resources and storage integration, grid control and asset optimization, workforce effectiveness, smart metering, and energy smart customer solutions - have been evolving for decades and will guide smart grid advancements efforts well into the future.
