The author outlines representative results of month-long audits of area control performance on US-Canadian eastern and western interconnected systems based on a novel components concept and related decomposition and evaluation techniques and utilizing real-time hourly data supplied by participating areas. Results include audits that identify self-caused (primary) and remotely caused (secondary) inadvertent components, separating each into import and export components and permitting comparative cost evaluations based on uniform and varying components pricing. Results showing decomposition of system time deviation into area-caused components are provided.<
