The authors report experimental results obtained by detecting partial-discharge amplitude distributions (PDADs) on synchronous generators using multiprocessor-based instrumentation. The applicability of this method as a monitoring and diagnostic tool is discussed. After a review of problems concerning partial-discharge detection and location in HV-generator stator windings, the authors describe some significant field experiences. Measurements were performed on 70-MVA, 120-MVA, and 160-MVA generators. The results obtained show the possibility of detecting internal changes in rotating-machine insulation during the lifetime of the machine itself and the use of the data obtained for a proper diagnostic
