Electromagnetic interference in medical devices: Health Canada's past and current perspectives and activities

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from radiofrequency sources may cause a variety of medical devices to malfunction, compromising patient safety. An overview of Health Canada's efforts to ensure that medical devices are safe from EMI is presented. Health Canada has identified and assessed the following EMI issues: interference from wireless local area network systems, electronic article surveillance systems, metal detectors, and Bluetooth technology. Health Canada is assessing the susceptibility of medical devices to EMI from these sources to develop suitable electromagnetic compatibility requirements and other solutions to minimize risk to patients.
