SAR calculation using FDTD technique with transparent absorbing boundary

A high-order FDTD scheme is developed to analyze the electromagnetic interaction of a handheld transceiver unit and a human head in personal communications. The computational scheme uses the mesh stencil as used in the standard Yee cells and it is relatively easy to modify an existing code based on the Yee algorithm. The scheme is adapted for analyzing the interaction between fields resulting from the handset antenna and a human head. The specific absorption rates (SAR) in various tissues are calculated for different handset configurations. A rectangular computational FDTD grid was used and the computational space was terminated by the transparent absorbing boundary. The computer program for a FDTD scheme summarized in the paper has been made adequately flexible to accommodate modeling of a wide variety of antenna and tissue topologies.
