Resonant tunneling devices and their applications to millimeter wave and infrared technologies

At present there is great interest in double barrier quantum well (DBQW) structures (Fig. 1) because their small dimensions coupled with the presence of negative differential resistance in the output current-voltage characteristics enables the realization of very high frequency oscillators and thus, potentially compact giga - and tera-hertz sources, modulators, and detectors.
