Energy conservation aspect of induction motors using improved design and power controllers

Different aspects of energy conservation in industrial motors are discussed. A motor design for energy efficient operation is examined and compared with conventional designs. Irrigation pumps and textile motors are taken as typical application areas for study; design changes for a 5 hp pump motor and a 15 hp textile motor leading to energy conservation are described, and experimental results are given. Energy conservation through adaptive variation of the supply voltage is also examined. The desired voltage variation for minimum energy consumption at varying loads is obtained by mathematical modeling and computer simulation, incorporating magnetic nonlinearity in the motor. Experimental results on a 2.2 kW induction motor driving a small spinning mill under voltage control are presented.<
