Differential optical flow and the control of gaze during passive flight in a virtual world

Ground target head-tracking performance is used to empirically specify limits of gaze control during passive flight in a virtual world. The data indicate that head-tracking error is related directly to total angular velocity of the target. Simulation modeling of the optic flow demonstrates the differences between conventional optic flow with a fixed gaze and differential optic flow with a tracking gaze. Potential processing pathways are proposed for both the tracking function and the flight control function.<
