Optical Fiber Sensors For Smart Structures

"Smart" materials incorporating mechanisms for sensing, signal processing and actuation have been suggested for aerospace, hydrospace, civil structures, biomedical and other uses. Optical fiber sensors offer a very good alternative to most conventional means for the measurement of the mechanical, optical, chemical and other properties within and external to such materials. This paper briefly reviews current research in the use of optical fiber sensors and systems for such applications.
