Simultaneous Self-Configuration with Multiple Managers for Organic Computing Systems

Organic computing systems consist of a plurality of applications composed of services, which are distributed to the nodes of the network. This service distribution is performed during the initial self-configuration process. In a former work, we developed a self-configuration mechanism which aims on the one hand to equally distribute the load of services on nodes as in a typical load balancing scenario and on the other hand to assign services with different importance levels to nodes so that the more important services are assigned to more reliable nodes. This baseline algorithm improves the availability of important services. However, it does not operate simultaneously with multiple managers. This paper proposes coordination strategies as enhancement to the baseline algorithm to operate with multiple managers at the same time. Our results show an outstanding performance for the self-configuration with a decrease in processing time of minimum 50%. To our knowledge this is the first self-configuration process that considers the importance of services to build reliable and robust heterogeneous distributed systems in a decentralized and simultaneous way.
