Solid state: VLSI goes to school: In the international struggle for technological leadership, U.S. universities are developing research centers for very-large-scale integrated circuits

The battlelines for winning the lead in the development of very-large-scale integration have been drawn. The contestants are in the United States, Japan, and Europe. Research is being pressed in the R&D divisions of the U.S. electronics industry and is being spurred by Governmental agencies such as the National Securities Agency, and the Department of Defense and armed services research arms. Increasingly, however, U.S. universities are putting their expertise behind the VLSI effort.
