Multi-Layer Interleave-Division Multiple Access for Joint Communication and Localization

In this paper, a full-duplex joint communication and localization system with a unified signal structure recently proposed by the authors is investigated. The main idea is to superimpose several data streams used for communication or localization purposes according to the principle of multi-layer interleave-division multiple access (IDMA). At the receiver side, the different data streams are separated and evaluated according to their purpose. Channel estimation plays an important role because the performance for both, communication and localization, depends on the channel estimates. As the system concept is very flexible, it is adjustable to a wide range of applications. Monte-Carlo simulations illustrate the system performance for both, communication and localization. Specifically, the influence of pulse shaping is studied.
