Polarization Diversity Performance of A Circular Patch Antenna For Wireless LANs Applications

In this paper, we assess the performances of a circular patch antenna for polarization diversity in indoor wireless LANs at 2.45GHz. The antenna is fed through two SMA type connectors. The position of the two feeding points on the circular patch has been optimized to provide a coupling level less than -30dB. The diversity antenna envelope correlation coefficient (rhoe) and the diversity antenna gain (DAG) are simulated in indoor multipath environment by using the 3D complex radiation patterns of the patch antenna. The simulation results are compared to measurements conducted inside a reverberation chamber considered as a model for indoor multipath. The patch antenna is shown to provide a low envelope correlation coefficient less than 0.02, and a polarization diversity gain better than space diversity. These features combined with a compact size and surface integration possibility, give to the proposed polarization diversity antenna a good position as a candidate for antenna diversity in indoor multipath for PC, PDA and notebooks.
