An analysis of the dynamic range of HF radio receivers

The HF frequency band normally provides very good communication propagation characteristics. It allows radio communication using ground wave for short distance links and utilises ionospheric reflection for longer distances. Wide usage of this frequency band has led to significant growth in the number of interfering signals, therefore affecting the reliability of communication. The article presents physical phenomena influencing restrictions in the dynamic ranges of contemporary HF receivers. The relationships between the main restricting factors are discussed and the author proposes statistical analysis methods of calculating the probabilities of occurrence of the following types of interference affecting dynamic receiver quality: blocking, reciprocal mixing, and 2nd and 3rd intermodulation.
