Biological neurons-functional roots of artificial neural nets

Artificial neural net models or simply "neural nets" have their functional roots in biological neurons. The ultimate aim of the neural nets is to achieve human-like performance. ANNs are being applied to diverse fields such as signal processing, medical diagnosis, financial analysis etc. This paper highlights the important characteristics of biological neurons and identifies the developmental stages of the neural nets, emphasising the prominent contributions.
