Characterization of wireless indoor communication channel: Measurements and simulation

The growing interest in wireless indoor transmission systems and practical applications of local area networks have resulted in many investigations on the propagation of radio waves inside buildings. Most of the work done in this field aims at experimentally obtaining the statistical characteristics of the signal. The results presented in this paper give a better understanding of the propagation behavior of 37.2 GHz signals in different environments, making it possible to predict the time delay propagation from a knowledge of the building structure. Reflections from walls also play a major role in maintaining a high signal level within a closed environment. These results encourage the application of this type of radio system for the development of secure local communication systems in well defined environments. In fact, most common building materials used for external walls and room partitioning are very effective in screening the signal. From the foregoing results, a highly unified numerical procedure to treat the complex bounded electromagnetic field problems is needed. Furthermore, a solution of the 3-D mathematical model based on the time-domain integral equation of the electric field is proposed using the Boundary Element Method.
