For Want of a Technology Policy

The author discusses the impact that new high-temperature superconductors are likely to have on the electric utility industry and some of the practical problems that have to be overcome first. The first impact will be on the demand side. As small superconducting motors and other devices gradually come into use, their improved efficiency will tend to slow the growth rate of demand for electricity. The new materials also have potential application to power transmission, magnetic energy storage, and advanced energy systems, such as magnetohydrodynamics and magnetic confinement fusion. The many problems encountered with these materials are examined. Those being studied are all brittle, have poor structural properties, and carry current poorly, at least in the form of wires or bulk materials. Some brief comments on industry policy regarding research into these materials are offered.<
