Practical considerations in the design of multisine test signals for system identification

The design of nonbinary multifrequency excitation signals for system identification is examined. The performance of such signals in parametric time-domain estimation and nonparametric frequency-domain estimation for noisy and nonlinear systems is assessed, and a comparison with the maximum length binary sequence is made. A nonbinary multifrequency signal composed of prime harmonics is proposed for frequency-domain estimation of nonlinear systems, and practical results are presented. Guidelines for test signal design are outlined.<
