Environmental dependence of dielectric and electrical conduction processes in insulating polymers

Time-resolved charging currents have been measured in a range of common thermoplastics in the virgin form, after field-cleaning and after out-gassing. The results indicate that the currents depend strongly on the presence of dissolved gases and water vapor within the polymer. Repeatable results may only be obtained after out-gassing for 24 h.<
