Despite the widespread success of the PWR, the design has certain disadvantages, notably in the complex demands placed on the reactor's safety systems. There is a continuing interest among reactor designers in the development of the safe integral reactor (SIR). The author looks at the design of the SIR, which is an integral PWR, reactivity control, stability, loss-of-coolant accident and decay heat.<
