Inverse problems for distributed parameter systems

The problems of modeling, identification and parameter estimation of distributed parameter systems are addressed. Some of the research contributions are overviewed, including theoretical and computational issues, and several motivational examples are discussed. The author briefly outlines the following: problems related to the estimation of stiffness and damping in flexible structures including beams, plates, planar grids and 3-D truss structures; nondestructive evaluation of materials via thermal techniques to locate cracks, corrosions, delaminations, etc; the estimation of growth rates (both individual and the distribution within a population), mortality and fecundity in populations of fish.<
