In situ monitoring of the degradation of insulating oil under AC voltage

A method to follow the in situ ageing of transformer oil under operation is presented. It is based on the variation of the refractive index of oil due to the presence of gases resulting from partial discharges and that may lead to failure of transformer in the long term.
