Design of a robust power system stabilizer over a wide range of load characteristics

The authors present a novel method for designing a power system stabilizer to improve the dynamic stability of AC power systems. the static load is modeled as a nonlinear function of load bus voltage and the dynamic load is modeled by an equivalent induction motor load. The rotor speed and angle deviations of the synchronous generator are used as a stabilizing signal to the power system stabilizer (PSS). The stabilizer gains are selected based on the eigenvalue sensitivity of electromechanical mode of the closed loop system with respect to the load characteristics. Eigenvalue analysis and simulation results show that the proposed PSS improves the system response over a wide range of load characteristics.<
