Giant M-E effect of multiferroic BaTiO/sub 3/-LaMnO/sub 3/ ceramic composites

The electric field-induced magnetization change in BaTiO/sub 3/-LaMnO/sub 3/ composites was demonstrated. The origin of the observed large effect of the applied electric field on the magnetization was discussed. The magnetic properties were obtained by vibrating sample magnetometer and superconducting quantum interference device. Also the dielectric properties were evaluated by temperature dependence of dielectric constant measured at 10 KHz using an impedance analyzer. It was found out that the sintered composites exhibited both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties together with a reduction of spontaneous magnetization at room temperature. The reduction was ascribed to the decreased electron transfer interaction induced by electrostriction.
