A Teflon-slab-loaded direct contact microwave diathermy applicator has been developed. It produces minimal leakage radiation during effective heating of simulated planar tissue models. 'The use of TEM mode excitation results in heating patterns which are more uniform than the patterms of comparable waveguide applicators without dielectric loading.
