A single-mode-fiber coupler with a variable coupling ratio

The tuning of the coupling ratio over a wide range in fused biconical-taper single-mode-fiber couplers by a controlled distortion of the coupling region is demonstrated. The tuning has negligible effect upon excess insertion loss.
