ESB Networks approach to SmartGrids has been targeted at how SmartGrid developments can facilitate the delivery of : (a) reduced carbon emissions (b) increased competitiveness (c) increased fuel security i.e. less reliance on imported fossil fuel The Smart Network is the intrinsic link connecting clean thermal generation and distributed renewables through an efficient Grid/Network to engaged customers using new technologies. Smart Networks principals have been at the core of ESB Networks investment decisions, including the lifetime cost of losses and continuity implications, prior to the recent refocusing on Smart Grid. The advancement of a smarter network for ESB Networks will be evaluated on these same principals. Therefore technical and economical assessment of new technologies/operations will be critical to wider roll out. The demonstration project includes four core strands: - Distribution Connected Windfarms & MicroGeneration - Smart Green circuits. - Smart Meter Customer Behavior Trials - Electric Vehicles.
