Application of Dynamic Quantizer to Load Control for Suppression of Power System Frequency Fluctuation

Penetration of large amounts of renewable energy sources into power systems leads to reduction in the frequency stability. As one of the strategies improving the stability, the load control which assists primary and secondary control of thermal power plants has been studied. The authors have proposed Autonomous Decentralized Load Control (ADLC), which is based on switching a lot of customers' appliances on or off according to frequency deviation. The ADLC can be interpreted as discrete-valued input control with a built-in static quantizer. In this paper, in order to enhance the performance of ADLC, we propose an application of dynamic quantizer which considers power system response to load control. The simulation study shows that the performance of dynamic quantizer based ADLC is higher than that of static quantizer based ADLC by using a single area power system model.
