Motion compensated field rate conversion for HD-MAC display

The EUREKA EU95 project aims to define an HDTV transmission system which is compatible with the MAC system. Intra-field bandwidth compression techniques will be used to achieve the increased spatial resolution, but the basic transmitted field rate will remain at 50 Hz. When large area, bright displays are available, the use of 50 Hz as a display field rate will lead to objectionable large area flicker. Thus there is a need for a high quality conversion at the display to a higher field frequency. Existing conversion methods are not entirely satisfactory, especially for signals of good dynamic resolution. The use of motion compensated interpolation holds out the promise of much improved results.<
