Congress gives bioimaging, bioengineering half a boost

The law establishes a National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, which will bring together basic research in biomedical imaging and bioengineering, including related areas of computer science, at the National Institutes of Health. The NIBIB will emphasize technology development— in contrast to the NIH and other government agencies’ existing emphasis on biomedical applications (which are related to specific diseases and organ systems)— but brings no immediate infusion of new money into the field.
