Design and Optimization of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines for Driving Cycle

Nowadays, in electric vehicle application, the average efficiency during the driving cycle is more attractive than the rated efficiency. The paper studies the design optimization of the average efficiency during the driving cycle for permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM). Thousands of working points of the driving cycle are divided into four sub-regions with the same total energy consumption of each sub-region, and equivalent to respective four representative working points. A design optimization procedure is proposed to evaluate the average efficiency by the four equivalent working points, the effectiveness of the design optimization is validated by finite element analysis (FEA) and compared with the rated efficiency optimal motor.
