Sizing and Placing EV Parking Lots: Challenges Ahead in Real Applications

According to the 2018 Global EV Outlook, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) is expected to increase to more than 10 million by 2020 and 130 million by 2030. A key challenge in this transition, particularly for large countries such as Brazil, is to ensure that parking lots (PLs) have the adequate capacity to cope with this EV fleet and that they are located in strategic places. This paper discusses the importance of considering traffic-flow, EV charging behavior, and distribution network constraints when sizing and locating EVPLs in real applications. In particular, and since PL operators aim at maximizing the return of their investment, this work analyzes the existing publications to point out the necessity to consider diverse aspects together to achieve solutions that ensure the feasibility of the PL installation and operation.
