Integrating Bluetooth with wireless and ricocheting

The authors specify the potential of integrating Bluetooth with a wireless network so that it can be used as the extension of a wireless system to provide in-building (wireless office) services, universal and multi-media, multi-system, multi-channel and multi-session services. They discuss the use combined use of ricocheting and Bluetoth so that in-building coverage can be provided through handoffs (HO). This approach enables the wireless system voice/data to take a free ride on Bluetooth within the building. Certain handshaking algorithms need to be developed so that different wireless systems voice/data can ricochet through Bluetooth seamlessly. They show how to provide universal access for mobile handset through Bluetooth and all existing cellular services to the Bluetooth users by managing their profiles, personal portal and other key features through the integrated Bluetooth/wireless network. HO and roaming are provided by treating the Bluetooth hub as a pseudo BTS. This can be done by through the airlink or by simulating mobile messaging and data transmission through a wireline. There is a need to enhance the public phone booth to incorporate Bluetooth functionality to support wireless multiuser and multi-session services. Bluetooth can also be used for baton 3G handoff, microcell applications and for the Poor man's 3G system.
