Discussion of "The truth about standby generator excitation support systems" (and reply)

The commenter suggests that the above mentioned work (see ibid., vol.26, no.4, p.726-34, 1990) might lead the reader to think that excitation support systems are not required for self-excited generators. This may not be the case. The commenter notes that the author addresses only one aspect of why excitation support systems (field forcing) have in the past been recommended, namely, short-circuit conditions, and that a much more common and practical reason why field forcing may be required, namely, motor starting requirements, was overlooked. The author replies that the above mentioned work was not intended to address the issue of motor starting.<
