Attenuation loss by displacement of cladding layer due to temperature and stress in OPLC

Optimization is getting over all the aspects of the world. In Power systems, the smart grids are taking place of the traditional grids. The main aspect of the smart grid is the two-way communication between the power grid and consumer. Optical fiber composite low voltage cable (OPLC) is a smart way to combine the electricity transmission with optical communication. In this paper temperature rise in the OPLC cable and its effect on the optical unit is being analyzed. We make a setup and experimentally analyze the effect of temperature rise on the optical fiber used in OPLC cable to measure the attenuation loss at different temperatures from 0 °C to 100 °C. The current flow in the conductors causes the temperature rise resulting in stress on an optical unit that displaces the cladding layer. The experimental platform is being set to analyze the micro-bending effect due to the displacement of optical fiber layers. The results that are obtained, get to the conclusion that in the normal operating condition of OPLC, the temperature rise and stress on the optical fiber will not cause any sufficient attenuation loss in optical communication.
