Design of UHF band UWB antenna for foliage penetration application

Detection of manmade objects under foliage is a challenging area of interest for military applications which involves design of Ultra-wideband (UWB) penetration imaging synthetic aperture radars (SAR). The antenna design of such a high resolution imaging radar system capable of foliage penetration demands a suitable UWB antenna in VHF or UHF band. The need of UWB antenna in a lower center frequency along with a contradictory requirement of compact size is a research area which is less explored. This paper illustrates the design of a compact UWB antenna in the UHF band. The proposed design of a UHF band patch antenna gives a satisfactory return loss in the frequency range 190MHz to 490MHz. This unidirectional radiating antenna with gain 5dB can be suitably used for Foliage penetration.
