The influences of lighting design on fruit images

Taking Apple as examples, this study explores how to create an object lighting design in accordance with object expectation images. First of all, we found fruit positive adjectives, and used cluster analysis to pick out fruit images. Thus, a laboratory controlling the attribute of the light source was constructed, and then fruit preference experiments for the fruit images and the overall satisfaction under different lighting design were carried out. Adopting Taguch method to map out 9 groups of light source conditions for the experiment, three color temperature (2700, 4200 and 6000 °K), three color rendering (70, 80 and 90 CRI) and three illumination (750, 1200 and 1500 Lux) were considered. The experimental results showed that for the apple, the color temperature, illuminance and color rendering were significant to images including fresh, beautiful luster, sweet taste, crisp taste, and the best overall image satisfaction was under the conditions of color temperature 2700 (° K), color rendering index 80 and 1500 (Lux). For Guava, the color temperature, illuminance and color rendering were significant for fresh, crisp, sweet-looking, bright-colored images and the light source combination with color temperatures of 6000 (° K), CRI of 80 has the best overall image satisfaction. The results of this study can apply to understand the psychological considerations when consumers buy fruit, and can construct the lighting design meeting the expectation images of fruits to serve as a reference basis for the lighting planning.
