Estimation for S-parameters of a differential communication transceiver IC applying an indirect measurement method

A method to estimate the multiport S-parameters of an IC device mounted on a PCB is proposed. This method is useful to obtain the actual S-parameters in operating environment. Our previously proposed indirect measurement methods for S-parameters of multiport circuit with some of its ports not directly measured are combined and organized as a self-contained method to estimate the whole S-parameters of multiport-connection consisting of PCB traces and wires. Here, measurement instrument is connected through the multiport-connection and the S-parameters of the target IC device is obtained from the measured result by de-embedding the indirect-measured multiport-connection S-parameters. An example is shown in detail when applied to an actual automotive LAN transceiver IC and its prototype PCB to evaluate the potential of this method up to 1.5GHz.
