A miniaturized and improved antenna using metamaterial

In this paper a comparison of antenna performance in terms of antenna efficiency with metamaterial structure and without metamaterial structure is discussed. The antenna proposed in this paper is having ground plane of length 35 mm, width 35 mm, length of patch is 25.5 mm and width of patch is 25.5 mm. Antenna was designed on flame retardant 4 (FR - 4) substrate with height of substrate is 1.6 mm and loss tangent 0.02. A slotted meanderline structure is designed in the ground plane to improve the efficiency of an antenna and to obtain multiband in the response. Introduction of slotted meanderline also helps in miniaturization of an antenna. The efficiency of an antenna without using metamaterial structure was nearly 27.9% at 5.6 GHz and with metamaterial structure was about 90.2% at 4.9 GHz and 67% at 5.6 GHz. The software used for simulation is integral equation three dimensional (IE3D).
