Improved microstrip patch antenna with enhanced bandwidth, efficiency and reduced return loss using DGS

Microstrip Patch Antenna (MPA) is used on a wide scale due to its physical simplicity and low cost but a drawback of this kind of antenna is its narrow bandwidth which sometimes confines its use in different applications. As a solution, two designs of an improved rectangular MPA with enhanced parameters are proposed in this paper. One of the proposed designs has a simple rectangular slot on ground surface while the other design has polygonal slots/defects. These slots on the ground surface are nothing but the Defected Ground Structure (DGS). To improve the working efficiency of the proposed antennas, optimization of the antenna design parameters has been carried out using High Frequency Structural Simulator (HFSS) software.
