Implementation of a wide band VHF high power tubular band pass filter

This paper presents the implementation of a wide band VHF high power tubular band pass filter. The previous work of authors provides analysis and simulation approximations. Based on this research, design, simulation models and high power analysis done to achieve high power handling. The peak power in this filter is considered 10 kW. The experimental measurements show close agreement with the simulation results. This filter has 0.5 dB ripples, return loss better than 17 dB, and 1dB insertion loss in pass band. Moreover, the power handling capability of this filter is examined experimentally using DC and AC conditions. Dc test provides the level of break down detection and evaluates dielectric withstand. Ac test in high frequency high voltage situation is done using high-power transmitter in VHF band, a pulse duration of 10 μsec, duty cycle of 1%, and a peak power of 10 kW. Based on the results of these experiments, DC and AC tests demonstrate reliability of the pick power handling capability of the tubular filter structure. The proposed analysis and implementation of this filter have demonstrated it can handle extremely high peak power levels.
