A basic study on neuro-feedback training to enhance a change of sensory-motor rhythm during motor imagery tasks

To apply motor imagery-based BCI to subject, S/N and dynamic range of the SMR (sensory-motor rhythm) components elicited by motor imagery should be enough high. In this study, neuro-feedback training experiments, on which the EEG band power of SMR on μ-band during motor imagery task of limbs was visually fed back to subjects, were executed in order to enhance ERD (event-related desynchronization) of oscillatory EEG elicited by motor imagery. The effect of neuro-feedback training was evaluated by the change of spatial distribution on scalp and EEG band power response of each channel. It was shown that the neuro-feedback training enhanced S/N and localization of spatial distribution of ERD on μ-band in two of five subjects.
