Demand response as a method for damping electromechanical oscillations of the power system

With the development of the smart meters, demand response (DR) is able to provide fast ancillary services, such as frequency control. Some recent studies demonstrated that DR can perform like thermal generators in the frequency control. However, little attention has been paid to DR's effect on the electromechanical oscillations of the power system. Fast-response DR can not only affect system frequency, but also influence the system damping to the electromechanical oscillations. This paper makes an effort to investigate the DR's damping effect on the electromechanical oscillations, and analyzes the relevant influencing factors for the damping provided by DR. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of DR in the damping control, and show effects of varying the influencing factors such as the maximum available DR resource, the position of the load where DR is implemented, and the response-delay of DR.
