Cosite interference simulation

Mutually destructive interference can occur among radios located at a common site. Fifty radios may be located in an Army tactical operations center (TOC). Identification and classification of cosite interference is difficult due to the extremely bursty nature of military transmissions. In support of the Army's First Digital Division we developed a simulation to model the performance of ultra high frequency (UHF) terrestrial and satellite communications in a dense cosite environment. The simulation applies a traffic load profile to determine active receivers and transmitters at any instant. Input power at each receiver from all cosite transmitters is computed and compared to the signal from the desired distant transmitter. This process is repeated at discrete time increments for the duration of a message. The error correction capability of the receiver is applied to determine message loss. Sensitivity analyses are shown for frequency separation, traffic loading, TOC configuration, communications range, directional antenna orientation, radio filter characteristics, and communications path length.
