Optimizing costs and processing times under variable external processing constraints

A technique is presented for analyzing complex production systems incorporating task durations, cost, and the impact of external factors. Processes are modeled as a network of dependent tasks, in which the processing time for each task varies based upon external conditions such as product quality, weather, work stoppages, etc. Analysis and optimization techniques are provided to give greater accuracy than is possible if such factors are ignored. The concept of feasible paths is introduced as a key factor in the analysis and optimization process.
