An application of fuzzy voltage regulator to a static excitation system of a phase compound synchronous generator

Phase compounding excitation systems of synchronous generators (SG) allow improving the voltage control quality under sharp load variations, and under short circuit on SG output. However, applying classical methods of automatic control theory and simplified linear models of the circuits for synthesizing automatic excitation regulators of these systems provides an optimum operation of SG only in the operating point neighborhood. Such drawbacks led to the introduction of new control systems based on adaptive control theory and the theory of fuzzy sets. In the current work, operations of a fuzzy voltage regulator (FVR) and of a traditional regulator of “strong action” applied to phase compound SG have been compared. The analysis of electromagnetic processes in SG has shown decreasing in voltage static error in the main operating modes of SG when using FVR. An advantage of this type of regulator is its better adaptability to parametric variations that occur in SG operating in power system with loading variations.
