Design of strong-coupling microcavities for optoelectronic applications

Summary form only given. Orgiu et al. [1] recently showed that strong-coupling of an excitonic material can lead to changes in the material's conductivity. This remarkable result is part of a wider development of the use of strong coupling to modify material properties [2]. This field is still in its infancy with much of the underlying physics still unclear. It has recently been shown that two dimensional (2D) materials with excitonic resonances undergo strong-coupling when placed inside an optical microcavity [3], suggesting that the properties of these 2D materials may be modified by strong-coupling, thereby extending the possibilities of these materials for a range of applications. Our goal is to explore whether strong-coupling can be used to modify the exciton transport in two dimensional materials. To do so will require microcavities specially designed for this purpose and it is the design of suitable microcavities that we discuss here.
