Case Study on Measurement of SpO2 from PPG Signals in the Presence of Motion Artifact

In recent years, researchers have presented a number of new methods for removing the motion artifacts from the PPG signal during the measurement of SpO
₂
parameters using a pulse oximeter. The ubiquity in the measurement of SpO
₂
due to motion artifacts presents the possibility for many new hybrid algorithms. In this paper, we present a review of the work on photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal with respect to motion artifacts and their open issues and research gap. This review specifically focuses on the state-of-the-art in measurement of SpO
₂
in the presence of motion artifacts where: 1) measures beyond pulse rate are evaluated, 2) non-ideal conditions (e.g., the presence of motion artifacts) are explored, and 3) use cases in relevant environments are demonstrated. We discuss gaps within the literature and future challenges for the research community. To aid in the continuing advancement of measurement of SpO
₂
in the presence of motion artifact research.
